What should you do if your ball is in the water?

I have no idea how it happens, but water seems to have a magnetic pull on my golf ball specifically. Every pond, every ditch, every innocent-looking puddle along the fairway draws it in as if it was made especially for that purpose. My kids now cheerfully laugh at me about it on the golf course, and honestly, I've come to accept it myself. What I'm having a harder time getting used to is that same question popping up again and again: what am I actually allowed to do now?
